Opening and performance: 4 July 2013, 8 pm

Tran Luong (*1960, Hanoi) is a conceptually working artist from Vietnam whose works have met with a broad international response since the 1990s. The video installation Lập Lòe (2012) shown at District, opens in conjunction with the symposium ổn định động. Mobile Academy Hà Nội Hội An Sài Gòn Bá Linh.

Lập Lòe is based on a series of performances with the same title. The reintroduction of performance, on the occasion of the opening night, marks the first time it is shown outside of Asia. As in the early performances, videos, images and exhibitions he realises as a curator, in Lập Lòe, Tran Luong embodies and questions the cleft past and martyred present of a generation of socio-critical Vietnamese cultural producers who arrived at more liberal and yet always endangered forms of expression only with the outset of Doi Moi (1986). When, in 2007, Tran Luong saw his son return home wearing the red-coloured pioneer cloth, an obligatory feature of communist childhood and youth, the idea developed for a series of performances addressing the internal and external scars of generationally handed-down austerity and ideological indoctrination.

Opening hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 2 - 7 pm and by arrangement. Break from 9 - 13 July 2013.
