DISTRICT BERLIN on the historic grounds of the Malzfabrik offers an interdisciplinary think and work space for cultural producers, who reflect current social developments from a critical perspective, deal with urban spaces and modes of its appropriation and re-evaluate the common.

From October 5th to November 11th 2012, DISTRICT shows the exhibition SAY IT LOUD. on words and actions displaying international artistic positions that deal with the nature of language as action. Together with artists and audience we will examine the current use of language for the construction of social interaction, public personae and information landscapes. In the exhibition hall of DISTRICT and in urban public space different artistic perspectives on the production of speech, discourse and text are realized. With various combinations of sculpture, installation, drawing, photography, performance, video and electronic media the artists translate words and ideas into abstract forms, social arrangements, bodies in motion and narrative spaces.

The poetic potential of SPAM will be explored as well as speech acts, singing and other physical dimensions of language in relation to the construction of social events and alternative narratives about our reality. The title SAY IT LOUD derives from the famous song by James Brown from 1968, which became the anthem of the Black Power and Civil Rights movements in the U.S.A. We see the exhibition as an opportunity to raise our voices, to re-think speech and dialogue and to understand the collective nature of the relationship between author, speaker and audience.

Integral part of the project SAY IT LOUD is the weekly program ARTIST SPEAKS with performances, lectures and discussions.
